“The Cave” - Acrylic on Canvas - 36” x 48”
Jon Drew, Joe Davey 2020
Based loosely on Plato’s allegory of the cave, the image is filled with recognizable scenes and objects composed in a way that feels very haphazard. Attention is centered around the glowing blue sun, which projects light in every direction. Small people surround this object with almost a ceremonial reverence, but their perspective is not that of the viewer. A touch of dramatic irony is available, as we might see that as if this whole painting was a sheet of paper, the page has begun to turn in the top left corner. The fate of those in the cave is uncertain.
